PACT awakens people to their greatest resource – each other – to enable them to transform the institutions responsible for their education, health, employment, and safety.  By providing under-represented people with the essential tools and organization to impact decision-makers, PACT promotes effective democratic participation and promotes the health and well-being of our community.   PACT led the community effort resulting in the historic Santa Clara County Children’s Health Initiative (CHI) – a model for communities around the state and nation.  At the time, Pre-CHI, approximately 87,000 children lacked insurance; today, as a direct result of the work of PACT and other allied agencies to expand health access, 97% of Santa Clara’s low-income children have he In response to the COVID- 19 Shelter in Place order and in response to its extension, PACT convened Interfaith Leaders throughout the County to come together and gather over 100 signatures on a faith “Moral Response to COVID – 19” statement.  This statement called on elected officials to take meaningful action to address the immediate needs of our community but also prepare to rebuild our economy together regardless of race, creed, sexual orientation, gender.  During a time of despair faith leaders convened to show the unity of diverse religious communities to stand together to send a message of hope and unity communities navigated this world wide pandemic. People Acting in Community Together  began its immigration work in collaboration with the San Jose Catholic Diocese “Justice for Immigrants” campaign, that included congregational dialogues amongst congregants, with the goal to build bridges between immigrant and non-immigrant communities.  This work culminated in the mobilization of over 1,000 community members calling for just immigration reform. Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren, at the time, Chair of the House Immigration Committee, committed to: Through our PICO statewide federations, similar work had been happening through the PICO organizations in Oakland, San Francisco, Contra Costa, Sacramento and Los Angeles.  PICO organizations in Berkeley, Contra Costa, and other areas have also embarked on youth-led organizing campaigns to educate public officials about the plight of undocumented students and the struggles they confront in trying to continue their education.   While a  comprehensive immigration reform in Congress, has yet to pass.  PICO organizations have won significant local victories around language access, consular identification cards, and other important public policy reforms for immigrants. At a statewide level and in coalition: PACT played a critical role in founding of the Santa Clara County Rapid Response network  and launched PACT’s Solidarity Network of 70+ congregations offering sanctuary/support to immigrants and the collaborative Rapid Response Network with a 24-7 hotline to connect immigrants under immediate threat from ICE with moral & legal observers, legal services, and family support.  PACT worked within its congregations to lead community-building defense and engage immigrants as leaders in securing policy changes that protect immigrants and our whole community. PACT Local Immigration strategy includes Know Your Rights training and materials; b) new state and local policies will be established through the leadership of immigrants and allies, including finding alternative funding streams for expanding legal immigration services.  PACT trainings are led by grassroots leaders and staff with similar backgrounds, they are inspired to join PACT’s leadership development and grassroots organizing as they realize they, too, can be leaders to create changes their families need. As part of the PICO federation and its member institutions are committed to an abundant vision of California and the United States that fully integrates all of our people.  We are especially committed to ensuring that newcomers play a vibrant role in our communities.  Our organizations are working to build bridges and alliances that will benefit our entire community in the long run.
